400,000 affordable homes for rent are required, ideally ready for occupation immediately, or within the next five years at the latest. According to the latest study by the Pestel Institut, there are several reasons for these developments, from heavy immigration from the EU, growing numbers of refugees and the increasing urbanisation of society, through to the spectacular failure of housing construction policy in recent years. One thing is clear: Affordable housing is in short supply. The concept of series construction is increasingly being relied upon to meet the challenges posed by this situation. Marcus Becker, Vice President for Economy from the Hauptverband der Deutschen Bauindustrie (German Construction Federation) and Axel Gedaschko, President of the GdW Bundesverband deutscher Wohnungs- und Immobilienunternehmen (Federal Association of German Housing and Real Estate Enterprises) also support this concept, and together they organised the event "Serielles Bauen – vom Prototyp zur Serie" (Series construction – from prototype to series). In future, a higher degree of prefabrication and shorter construction times in conjunction with higher quality will be required to work cost-effectively and efficiently – and therefore successfully.

However, forming a non-positive connection between two pre-cast concrete components on the construction site has so far been a weak point of pre-cast construction methods, which have otherwise provided time and cost savings by using components prefabricated in the factory.
This is where the POWERCON wall locking connector from the integrated UNICON® product family comes into play and provides a solution. It enables pre-cast concrete components to be connected on the building site by simply pushing together the galvanised cast steel connectors. Since its market launch, the UNICON® system has been used in a wide range of projects both in Germany and abroad.
The recent approval granted by the Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik (DIBt) has paved the way for use of the sophisticated POWERCON connector for series construction in the German market. This is because approval Z-14.4.709 proves the usability and applicability of the product in accordance with state building regulations.
